AKC Canine Good Citizen Program (GCP) for Dogs
The AKC Program is a fun way to train your dog and is designed to recognize dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. The rapidly growing nationally recognized program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and basic training and good manners for dogs. This six week ten step program provides an excellent foundation for other fun activities such as Rally, Obedience, and Agility and results in a well -mannered dog that is a joy to live with. Some therapy dog groups require passing the CGC class as a prerequisite. Sharon will guide you and your dog through the ten steps to becoming a new CGC graduate.
The ten step program will focus on positive reinforcement reward based dog training. Each week we will practice the 10 steps required to pass the CGC test. They will include:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger.
2. Sitting politely for petting.
3. Appearance and grooming.
4. Out for a walk (loose leash walking).
5. Walking through a crowd.
6. Sit, down and staying in place.
7. Coming when called.
8. Reaction to another dog.
9. Reaction to distractions.
10. Supervised separation.
Immunization records required at first class. When your dog passes the CGC test you will be given the paperwork to request the CGC certificate. A processing fee of $8 is required. All breeds are welcome, but no aggressive dogs.
