K-9 Unit

Officer Bates started working for the Port Hueneme Police Department in November of 2000. After being on patrol for 2 years, he was promoted to Detective for the Property and Fraud Crimes Unit. Officer Bates transferred to the K-9 Unit in July of 2004 and was partnered with “Alf”. Although Alf was a great dog, he was unable to fulfill his commitment with the Port Hueneme Police Department K-9 program. In December of 2004, Officer Bates was given a new partner, “Don”.
Don was born in Suhl, Germany on August 13, 2002 as “Don vom Suhler Wappen”. Don is a German Shepherd specially trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and protection. Officer Bates and Don enjoy protecting the citizens of Port Hueneme. When Don isn’t fighting crime, he enjoys playing with children and his handler. Officer Bates and Don make up the first K-9 team of the unit. Both teams are available for demonstrations and special events and can be contacted at the Port Hueneme Police Department (805) 986-6530 or RBates@ci.port-hueneme.ca.us.

Officer Lopez has been working for the Port Hueneme Police Department since 2003. During that time, he has been assigned to patrol and the gang enforcement detail. He was selected six months ago to be a K-9 handler for the Department and was assigned “Ike” as his new partner.

Ike is a male German Shepherd, and was born in Muhlenstr, Germany on October 18, 2004. He was named Cowboy von der Salztal-Hohe. He is specially trained for protection, and to sniff out and apprehend wanted suspects. Ike is very friendly and loves to be around children. Officer Lopez and Ike have given numerous school and organization presentations in the community of Port Hueneme. They truly enjoy teaching children what being a K-9 handler is all about!
