On July 2nd 2018, the Port Hueneme City Council voted to place Measure U on the 2018 November ballot. Measure U is a local funding measure that would –if enacted--provide a reliable, locally-controlled revenue source for Port Hueneme’s public safety and quality of life services.
As everyone knows, Port Hueneme is an excellent place to live with an amazing quality of life. Unfortunately, the City is unable to continue providing services at the level residents expect and deserve. Ever since the State eliminated local funding, Port Hueneme started losing nearly $1,000,000 annually.
Although we have made deep cuts to public services and reformed our pensions, there is simply no more room to cut while continuing to provide quality services.
The Port Hueneme City Council placed the one-cent Measure U on the local ballot to address these historic state takeaways and provide locally-controlled funds that address priorities identified by residents like you. If approved, Measure U would help support priorities identified by the public,
- Preventing the elimination of Port Hueneme’s local police department
- Protecting quick responses to 911 emergencies
- Preventing gang activity and drug related crimes
- Maintaining streets and repairing potholes
- Keeping public areas clean and free of graffiti
Port Hueneme is one of the few cities in the county of our size with its own local police department – which guarantees proactive neighborhood patrols, and that our officers are available when needed.
If enacted, Measure U would also fund road repair and fix potholes, maintain streets, sidewalks, and curbs, and maintain parks, beaches, and other public facilities.
Measure U requires strict accountability including a financial oversight committee and annual independent financial audits to ensure that funds are spent properly and used locally for Port Hueneme’s benefit only. Measure U funds cannot be taken by the State.
